At holde myrer er blevet en meget popul\u00e6r hobby i de senere \u00e5r. Selv om det f\u00f8rste kendte formicarium (terrarie til myrer) allerede blev vist p\u00e5 verdensudstillingen i Paris omkring 1900, var det f\u00f8rst i 1956, da \"Uncle Milton's Ant Farm\" blev udstillet, at de f\u00f8rste formicariums frit kunne k\u00f8bes.<\/p>\n<p>Der har nu i nogle \u00e5r v\u00e6ret mange forskellige leverand\u00f8rer af formicariums, hvoraf de fleste er lavet af plastik. Det er en enest\u00e5ende oplevelse at se en enkelt dronning opfostre sine f\u00f8rste arbejdere over en \u00e5rr\u00e6kke og derefter se sin koloni vokse til tusindvis af medlemmer i l\u00f8bet af \u00e5rene gennem perfekt samarbejde og udnyttelse af ressourcerne. De er ekstremt sociale dyr, og nogle arter danner forskellige kaster som f.eks. arbejdere, soldater, landm\u00e6nd eller endda sygeplejersker. Og g\u00e6t engang, de er alle hunner.<\/p>\n<p>Myrer er utroligt vigtige for vores milj\u00f8. Ikke alene findes de i alle beboelige \u00f8kosystemer i verden, de er ogs\u00e5 mere specialiserede og alsidige end nogen anden art. Myrer ligner os ogs\u00e5 i deres levevis. Arbejdsdelingen, samlivet i store kolonier p\u00e5 et begr\u00e6nset rum og brugen af forskellige niveauer i f\u00f8dek\u00e6den i alle \u00f8kosystemer g\u00f8r dem s\u00e5 succesfulde, ligesom os mennesker. Der findes myrer i vores byer, skove, \u00f8rkener, bjerge, tropiske omr\u00e5der og endda mangrove og subarktiske omr\u00e5der.<\/p>\n<p>Ligesom de beboede levesteder er forskellige, er redetyperne ogs\u00e5 forskellige. Den mest almindelige redeform er jordreden. Andre arter lever f.eks. i d\u00f8dt tr\u00e6, i hulrum i tr\u00e6er og mellem sten, i h\u00f8jnister eller i s\u00e5kaldte myreplanter. Andre mindre almindelige redetyper er bivuakreder hos fouragermyrerne, silkereder hos v\u00e6vemyrerne eller kartonreder hos Lasisus fuliginosus.<\/p>\n<p>For at holde myrer med succes har det vist sig, at man skal efterligne de naturlige forhold s\u00e5 t\u00e6t som muligt.
